Heat sink is a heat exchanger, or heat spreader, that works similar to a car radiator or what is found in air conditioning units. The exchanger is equipped with small fins that increase the surface area in contact with the computer atmosphere. The heat sink’s purpose is to transfer heat away from the processor. It accomplishes that task at a rate proportional to the cross-section area and temperature gradient. Basically the heat exchanger transfers heat away from the processor into the surrounding air. The computer fan or fans will blow the heated air out of the computer maintaining cooler environment for the components to work their magic.
