The Importance of Roofing Screws
We really must remember to thank the Greeks more often for their many contributions toward modern society, particularly for the screw that they so wittingly bestowed upon the world back around the first century. Take a moment and imagine where we would be without the screw. Start making a list of all of the ways society has come to depend on screws—I can assure you, that list would take you until the next century to complete, because there is rarely an application that doesn’t incorporate a screw in one capacity or another. For many people, screws are taken for granted. But for others, particularly those who make a living in the construction, manufacturing and automotive industries, screws invoke immense pleasure and are appreciated for their superior fastening mechanisms. There exists a wide range of screws, available in a variety of materials, sizes and styles. One such type is the roofing screw.
Roofing screws are used for holding down shingles, repairing gutters and downspouts and installing attic skylight. Roofing screws are typically manufactured from stainless steel or aluminum and are threaded up the entire length of the shaft. Furthermore, roofing screws are often manufactured with washers to provide extra support, which is important considering the level of exposure roofing screws must withstand in a consistent bases. Roofing screws are valued in the same way any other screw is valued—because they secure things together. And they are generally preferred over nails due to their clever little screwing mechanism in which they are named after. When constructing a house or re-shingling a roof, roofing screws are needed—as opposed to any other screw—because of the supplementary characteristics they contain, such as the additional threading and the washers, which are used to tightly secure the roofing screw’s head to the surface of the roof, sealing the space from any unwanted moisture to leak through. Not using roofing screws can potentially cause loose shingles and water damage.
