Soundproofing in Music Halls
In my last semester of college I was required to take a music class in order to fulfill all of the university’s requirements. This was the first class I had ever taken in the performing arts center building so I didn’t really know what to expect. In this facility there were many practicing rooms for musicians as well as dance halls, classrooms and a theater. Needless to say there was a lot of noise constantly being produced from this building. Our classroom was right across the hall from various practice rooms for students to come and play their instruments to prepare music. These are very small rooms about the same size as a single room bathroom. As I walked past these rooms on the way to my class room the first day I was worried that this might be an issue inside the classroom and cause many disruptions. As class began I was surprised not to hear any loud sound interruptions. The teacher told us not to worry because each of those practice rooms was equipped with soundproofing systems.
A soundproofing system is a system that creates a barrier that noise will stay inside of. These are often found in use at places where music is being made such as these practice rooms or music recording studios. They are beneficial for places like these because they can control where noise goes and no ones sounds with interfere with anyone else’s. Soundproofing can be achieved using a few different methods such as absorption, damping and noise cancellation. These all involve different kinds of materials that are placed inside the walls or sometimes on the outside to get rid of noise and contain it all into one specific area. They allow for everyone to have a good music experience in places where you just cannot escape noise.
