Shrink Wrap Packing

Have you ever been camping and your bag gets wet, soaking all the clothes you packed inside? What about packing for a trip and your suitcase just doesn’t provide enough space to fit everything in it? Well there is a packing technique that is similar to shrink wrapping that will reduce space and protect your clothes and other assorted luggage from the elements.

Shrink wrap is used by a large variety of companies to package their products. Whether it is food, cosmetics, vehicles or even buildings, shrink wrap can safely secure a plethora of products no matter the size or quantity. Who would have thought a similar technique could be used to help stay organized and reduce space in your closet, bag, suitcase or what have you? While literally shrink wrapping your belongings seems rather unrealistic, being you would have to unwrap and re-wrap all your stuff if you wanted to use them, you can mimic the effect by using plastic bags. Zip-locks aren’t only reserved to be used as food storage devices.

When preparing for my wilderness survival canoe trip in high school, my teacher told the class to use large zip lock bags to help with packing. It was suggested to organize our clothes and other supplies into what could be fit in these plastic bags, then push all the air out of the bag with your knees before sealing. This significantly increased the amount of stuff we could bring and served as an extra layer of defense in case water got in our bags during the week long trip. If it weren’t for my teacher’s advice, I never would have thought to use zip-lock bags for anything other than storing leftovers.
