Forging Onward With Forge Blowers

Depending on your plans for use, the type of metal forge you employ will not necessarily be the same as everyone else. For instance, companies that created large amounts of forged metal may use a different machine altogether than someone who will maybe only use their metal forge once in a while. Even production numbers for a smaller company lying somewhere in between a factory and a single person could affect the metal forging equipment someone requires.

Of course, since different kinds of equipment are needed for different kinds and sizes of metal forging projects, metal forging ovens or machines will require their own different accessories. A coal-burning forge, for instance, needs to be burning at a certain temperature for a designated amount of time. This is because the fire has to reach a high enough temperature to make whatever metal someone is forging malleable. The heat must remain constant since you do not want the metal forge to cool down in the middle of trying to shape a piece of steel. A means by which people who use coal metal forges keep the fire burning hot enough is called a forge blower.

If you’re at all familiar with how machines built to run on coal function, you know that when coal fueled machines became an option it was imperative that there was someone to attend them. There was usually someone to shovel the coal and someone to attend the bellows – that accordion-like device that would blow air on the fire in order to stoke the flame. Today, the forge blower takes the place of the bellows operator. The forge blower blows the right amount of air onto the coal forge to keep the fire burning. This method is advantageous because it is not only economical, it also protects a person from doing a very dangerous job.
